A root canal saves the tooth, not just the pain

What is actually infected
The pain that sends someone in for a root canal doesn't come from the tooth's hard outer shell. It comes from the pulp, the soft tissue and nerve packed into the center of the tooth, under the enamel and the layer of dentin beneath it. A deep cavity, a crack, or repeated dental work can let bacteria reach that pulp and infect it.
That distinction is the whole reason the tooth can be saved instead of pulled. Once the infected pulp is gone, the outer structure of the tooth, the part that actually bites and chews, is still there and still yours. A root canal is built around keeping that structure rather than replacing it.

Clean, disinfect, seal
The procedure follows the same three steps every time. Dr. Tuft or Dr. Brittain opens a path into the tooth and removes the infected pulp from the canal, or canals, running down toward the root. The empty space is then disinfected to clear out the bacteria that caused the problem in the first place.
Once the canal is clean, it's filled and sealed so nothing can get back in. That seal is what keeps the infection from returning and what lets the tooth go back to normal use once it's healed.

Why a crown usually follows
A tooth that's had a root canal has less of its own structure left than it started with, and it's more prone to cracking under normal biting force without support. That's why a crown is placed over it in most cases, capping the tooth and carrying the load the way the original structure did.
